Tier List
A desrt Engine Tier List
Engines define top speed, fuel type, and how painfully you laugh at hills. This tier list ranks every major powerplant in A desrt by practical value—not just peak km/h on a flat road.
Powerplants are the rarest loot that still changes every other decision. DarkCodes spread engines across rarity bands: common VAZ blocks anyone can install after the tutorial, rare Injection and Turbine options for midgame flex, very rare EngineD diesel for 210 km/h kings, and extremely rare Electric units that break the fuel meta entirely. Speed numbers below come from community testing—150 km/h for VAZ, 180 km/h for Injection, 210 km/h for EngineD—with Electric and Turbine behaving uniquely enough that raw km/h only tells half the story. Always pair tier thinking with [Fuel & Fluids](/items/fuel-fluids/) because diesel mis-fuels delete runs faster than zombies.
S tier — EngineD diesel
EngineD is very rare and tops practical speed charts around 210 km/h while requiring diesel instead of gasoline. Tier S not because everyone should run one day one, but because a correctly fueled EngineD on a [Van](/vehicles/van/) or [Bus](/vehicles/bus/) redefines cross-map timing. Downsides: diesel supply chains, heavier weld stress, and theft risk on public servers when you park for ruin dives. Obtain via deep ruins after shotgun-cleared rooms—see [Weapons Tier List](/tier-list/weapons/). If you cannot stock diesel bigcans (30 L), drop EngineD to A tier for your personal meta.
A tier — Injection and Turbine
Injection engines are rare with about 180 km/h capability on gasoline, oil, and water—the best Car upgrade most players will realistically mount. They balance speed, fuel availability, and compatibility with starter chassis. Turbine engines share rare tier placement with distinct audio and high-performance gasoline appetite. Turbine lands A tier instead of S because maintenance burn and rarity volatility make them content pieces as often as workhorse picks. Both beat VAZ for highway dominance once you can afford 5 L oilcan service each leg from [Vehicle Maintenance](/vehicles/maintenance/).
| Engine | Rarity | Top speed | Fuel | Tier |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| EngineD | Very rare | ~210 km/h | Diesel | S |
| Injection | Rare | ~180 km/h | Gasoline | A |
| Turbine | Rare | High | Gasoline | A |
| VAZ | Common | ~150 km/h | Gasoline | B |
| Electric | Extremely rare | Varies | Charge | B–S situational |
B tier — VAZ and Electric
VAZ is common at 150 km/h—the mandatory first engine on [Car](/vehicles/car/) guides. It is B tier because it is replaceable, not bad. Every account touches VAZ; tier lists measure when to outgrow it. Electric engines are extremely rare with charge-based logistics that skip gasoline stops but introduce patch-specific battery gameplay. Electric spans B to S depending on whether you value novelty or reliability—most players treat it as a trophy until balance stabilizes. Mopeds use integrated small engines outside this swap table.
Upgrade path recommendations
- Install common VAZ immediately on first Car (150 km/h baseline).
- Farm ruins for Injection rare (180 km/h) when gasoline stockpiles exceed two bigcans.
- Transition to EngineD very rare (210 km/h) only with diesel bigcans and Van/Bus plan.
- Collect Turbine or Electric for collection or content after core route is stable.
Cross-check swaps with [Engine Upgrades](/build/engine-upgrades/) and the [Engine Comparison tool](/tools/engine-comparison/). Never drag a new block without wrenches and screwdrivers from [Tools](/items/tools/). In multiplayer, call engine tier before looting so teammates do not pour gasoline into your fresh EngineD. Patch drops may rebalance Electric—watch DarkCodes Discord for tier shifts.
