Tier List
A desrt Vehicle Tier List
Vehicle class matters as much as engine rarity. This list ranks Car, Car2, Van, Moped, and Bus chassis by when they pay off—and when they waste weld hours.
DarkCodes ships five vehicle families that share fluids and weld rules but diverge on progression timing. Tiering vehicles separately from engines prevents the classic mistake: installing a very rare EngineD into a Bus before your crew can feed it diesel bigcans. We rank on progression value (how fast you escape the garage), cargo efficiency (loot per kilometer), speed ceiling (with typical engines), and crew synergy (solo vs squad). Car and Car2 tie for early S tier because starter parts spawn in the garage, house, and basement. Moped sits at A tier for scouting. Van holds A tier midgame. Bus rises to S tier only when multiplayer logistics support its mass.
S tier — Car / Car2 (progression) and Bus (co-op endgame)
Car and Car2 earn S tier for accessibility: hood, doors, engine, radiator, battery, and seats appear in starter zones documented on [Car reference](/vehicles/car/). A VAZ at 150 km/h gets you moving; Injection at 180 km/h scales the same frame. Car2 differs cosmetically and in mount quirks but tiers identically. Bus earns conditional S tier for coordinated groups running scheduled loot trains—four seats of wrench talent, stacks of 30 L bigcans, and EngineD at 210 km/h turn Buses into mobile bases. Solo Bus tier drops to B without crew support because recovery and fuel multiply downtime.
A tier — Van and Moped
Van is A tier midgame: more cargo than Car, accepts Injection and EngineD, but spawns world-side rather than in the tutorial garage. Perfect when ruin loops overflow two gascans per return. Moped is A tier specialist—8.1 L gas plus 0.5 L oil per fill makes it the cheapest recon vehicle. It will not carry EngineD home, but it finds where Bus shells spawn. See [Moped reference](/vehicles/moped/) and [Moped guide](/guides/moped/) for ratio details.
| Vehicle | Tier (solo) | Tier (co-op) | Best engine pairing |
|---|---|---|---|
| Car / Car2 | S | S | VAZ → Injection |
| Van | A | S | Injection → EngineD |
| Moped | A | B | Built-in small engine |
| Bus | B | S | EngineD → Turbine |
B tier — Bus solo and niche picks
Bus alone is B tier for most solos: rare spawn, heavy maintenance, and fuel burn without passengers helping weld. Moped drops to B in co-op when cars are available—only the designated scout should ride one. No vehicle here is D tier because even a hammer-and-hope Car beats walking the desert with a shotgun and no wheels.
Fleet composition by playstyle
- Solo speedrun: Car with Injection, backup Moped at base.
- Solo hoarder: Van with Injection when found; never Bus until stockpiled.
- Co-op loot crew: Van daily driver + Bus weekend project.
- Content creator: Bus + Turbine + Sandbox+ sandbox for B-roll.
Align vehicle tier picks with [Engine Tier List](/tier-list/engines/) and maintain everything via [Vehicle Maintenance](/vehicles/maintenance/). When debating Car vs Car2, choose cleaner welds over aesthetics. When debating Van vs Bus, count active Discord friends who will log in for recovery ops—that answer decides more than any table.
